the odyssey -- book 10

Aelos' six sons and six daughters are married to each other. Aeolus gave Odysseus gifts of silver and gold. They sail to Telephylus. It turns out that the island is full of giants that begin killing Odysseus' men. Odysseus escapes to the isle of Aeaea. He kills a stag and makes rope so the men may have something to eat and as means of survival. They are lost. They split into two squads to scout the land. A goddess suspiciously invites one squad of men in for food. She puts a spell on them and transforms them into pigs and hogs and other animals. Eurylocos, who did not fall for the trick, returns to Odysseus and tells him what happened to his men. Odysseus leaves his ship and find Hermes, who is in the form of a youthful boy. Hermes asks him if he is going to try and save his friends and gives him information and tips. Hermes also gives him an herb that makes him impervious to Circe's charms. She trys to enchant him, but he pulls his sword and she begs for his hand in bed. He convinces Circe to turn his men back to normal. Eurylochus accuses Odysseus of setting them up with the giants and Circe. After they threaten to leave him behind, he shuts up and comes with; he is very scared of Odysseus. They stay at Circe's for one year and finally, after a year, Circe, tells Odysseus that before he can go home, he must first go to Hades and meet Persephone.
