The Odyssey- book 1

• People blame the Gods for bad things that happen in their lives when it is merely their choice of life that takes them there.. They sent Hermes to warn the people that there would be a murder based on adultry and Orestes will avenge his father when he becomes a man, to sa get revenge. Athena believes that he got what he deserved and they hope that others learn from his wrongdoings.
• Calypso captures Odysseus and wants him to be her husband and asks that they let him go, but Posiedon doesn't want him to be let go to live his own life.. The gods agreetho that he be let loose and they know that Posiedon wil be mad,but it's time that he be free. Once he is set free he is to find his path home and when he finds his father his bravery will be commended.
• When Athena went to Odysseus, they prepared a feast and lots of people were there.
• Telemanchus and Mentes hit it off @ the feast and were waited on hand and foot... he says that the men there work for nothing and get everything handed to them and that is why they love it so much, but if Odysseus were to come back.. they would want to get out as fast as possible,but nothing can make him feel better than if his father were to return to him and he believes him to be gone forever.. he asks Mentes about his father and if he was a guest @ this party b4, but he also senses the irony of this.

• mentes states that their fathers were friends and that he was alive on this earth somewhere and the Gods were keeping him from returning (he was unwilling)and says they have not seen eachothe rbut knows that his father will return to him soon from Troy he lives.
• Penelope was mourning the los of her husband and easig her mind for the evening..Athena put her to rest.
• Men would line up outside her dorr waiting to be the one she would marry for she had land and many riches, but he wouldn't stand for it.. and it ends in sleep

Cycle of the Hero, Literary Archetypes, Tragic Hero

Cycle of the Hero

1. Call to Adventure- Obi-Wan calls Luke to come with him to Alderon after recieving the message from Leia and he accepts... :)


2. Helper- Throughout the movie Luke gains a family of helpers who are along with him all the way... Leia, Han Solo, Chubaka, C3PO, R2D2, Obi-Wan (before the death ).


3. Threshold of Adventure- When C3PO, R2D2, Luke, and Obi-Wan defeat the sandpeople and leave to find a way to Alderon, (they go to the bar) but before they left... the doorway between the sand and the city is entering the unknown.


4. Tests- when the Empire came and killed Luke's aunt and uncle, the battle with the sandpeople, Obi-Wan teaching Luke how to use the force, The battle between Obi-Wan and Darth Vadar(for Luke's sake), the fight to escape the garbage dump, Obi- Wan becomes Luke's conscience, the death of his friend, Darth's confusion of becoming good or staying evil, Luke's heart to try and convince his father to come to the good side.

A Tragic Hero

1. A belief in his own freedom- luke wants to get away from the farm
2. A supreme pride- Luke thinks he can just DO anything
3. Capacity for suffering- When Luke fights DArth he feels guilt but also knows he's doing right
4. A sense of committment- he follows through with everything and especally the battle between him and his father
5. Vigorous protest- It was difficult for he and Leia to accept that darth was their father
6. Transfiguration- Luke found who he was and what his destiny had become
7. Impact- He finds who he his and where his heart and mind lies.

Heroes and Themes

Hero Qualities:

• bravery(all the tests that get in the way of their path), determination(Luke went through all the training to become a great jedi.. and accomplished that through his determination), fear of loss(Luke feared the loss of the ones he loved because everything else he ever knew had been taken from him and he wanted to bring Darth to the good side so he could make sure Leia was safe from all harm and what was left of him would remain), sacrifice(Obi-Wan sacrificed himself to save luke knowing that luke was more important to the jedi world than he was), fights for something(Luke tries to destroy the empire so they can live with freedom), don't know who they are and need to find themselves(Luke was lost and got the calling from Obi-Wan to come along and help save the Galaxy from the empire, but he never knew who he was so accepting the mission led him to finding himself and becoming a hero)
