Cycle of the Hero, Literary Archetypes, Tragic Hero

Cycle of the Hero


  1. Call to Adventure- Obi-Wan calls Luke to come with him to Alderon after recieving the message from Leia and he accepts... :)

  2. Helper- Throughout the movie Luke gains a family of helpers who are along with him all the way... Leia, Han Solo, Chubaka, C3PO, R2D2, Obi-Wan (before the death ).

  3. Threshold of Adventure- When C3PO, R2D2, Luke, and Obi-Wan defeat the sandpeople and leave to find a way to Alderon, (they go to the bar) but before they left... the doorway between the sand and the city is entering the unknown.

  4. Tests- when the Empire came and killed Luke's aunt and uncle, the battle with the sandpeople, Obi-Wan teaching Luke how to use the force, The battle between Obi-Wan and Darth Vadar(for Luke's sake), the fight to escape the garbage dump, Obi- Wan becomes Luke's conscience, the death of his friend, Darth's confusion of becoming good or staying evil, Luke's heart to try and convince his father to come to the good side.

  5. Helpers-( refer to #2)

  6. Triumph- luke convincing darth to find the jedi within

  7. Flight-

  8. Threshold Struggle- the death of Anakin

  9. Elixir- the force

  • The Wise Fool- obi-wan
  • The devil Figure- chancelor
  • The Outcast- 3po and r2d2
  • The Double- darth-luke/rebels alliance- empire
  • The Scapegoat-obi-wan, luke, darth
  • The Temptress- the force
  • The Good Mother- leia or obi-wan

A Tragic Hero

  1. A belief in his own freedom- luke wants to get away from the farm
  2. A supreme pride- Luke thinks he can just DO anything
  3. Capacity for suffering- When Luke fights DArth he feels guilt but also knows he's doing right
  4. A sense of committment- he follows through with everything and especally the battle between him and his father
  5. Vigorous protest- It was difficult for he and Leia to accept that darth was their father
  6. Transfiguration- Luke found who he was and what his destiny had become
  7. Impact- He finds who he his and where his heart and mind lies.
